Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese car manufacturing company. This company is widely known for its small-sized cars and off-road vehicles. It was first named as Hatsudoki Sieze Co., Ltd in 1907. In 1951, it was renamed as Daihatsu Motor Co., LTD. The name Daihatsu came from a Japanese word “kanji” which means an engine manufacturer. Together with its name change, it also started to export cars to Europe. It did not enjoy successful sales until the year 1980. In 1967, the Daihatsu management signed an agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation agreeing that Toyota is allowed to sell Daihatsu cars.
Daihatsu logo is a capitalized letter D. It was one of the simplest car logos that was known to the public. However, even though Daihatsu logo was just simple, it has an appeal to the public compared to other car logos. Among several car logos, Daihatsu logo was known for its unique but simple company representation.
Daihatsu became popular for its off-road models. There, first off, road car was the utility Taft. It has 1.0 petrol – 2.5 littre diesel engines. They next launched Fourtrak in 1985. It is a modified off roader, which was better than the first one. Then after it was Sportrak, which was modified to look better than others though it did not go to high sales compared to other car companies.
In a general view, although Daihatsu did not became that popular compared to other car companies, they still managed to gain sales. They also had remarkable models like the stylish Copen roadster that has managed to pass export quality.
Just like other companies, Daihatsu also faced business trials. There was a time when there sales did not went well. And in later 2011, Daihatsu announced that their production will stop in Europe in January 2013. They also decided t invest in Indonesia to build a factory that will produce low cost cars.
